January 26, 2017

Good Morning to the friends of From Our Hearts, With 2016 having ended and BreastFest planning in full swing it is time to give you all another update with what’s been going on.
In 2016 Partners in Breast Cancer Care provided services to 49 islanders with one being diagnosed with breast
cancer. They spent $7985 of our grant money. Lee Health’s Regional Cancer Center currently has one client
being served under our grant. Two others were also under our grant originally but they now have been moved to
coverage from Medicaid. Lee Health spent $1097 in 2016, down significantly from the $13,673 in 2015. Both Lee
Health and Partners work hard to put people under Medicaid whenever possible.
While our expenses since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act have dropped, we anticipate that may
change given the new presidential administration.
This year’s Breast Fest will be a bit different than in the past. In addition to the walk, we are holding a fundraising
karaoke contest. Six preliminary contests will be held in February in various island venues with two winners per
venue. While the contestants will sing, the winners of each contest will be determined by how much money they
raise. Voting is done with quarters so we will weigh each contestant’s buckets of quarters to determine the
winners. The final contest will be held at Breast Fest beginning at 2pm. Music will start after the walk at 10am and
continue until the karaoke contest.
We only have eight board members and with the six contest in February, that’s a lot of work for such a small
group. At each preliminary contest we need four cheerleaders (we provide the hats and pompoms!) to go through
the audience to collect money/votes. We also need two people each night to sell quarters to the audience.
Winners are determined by weight so voters will need quarters! Lastly we need someone to help collect and count
quarters. We have equipment to do this so there will be no manual rolling of quarters.
Here are the details:

On another note, we have been actively networking with other organizations in our area to find ways to provide
more support to islanders with breast cancer or those needing screening. The first year after being cancer free is
critical to staying that way. There are many free services available in Lee county that can help such as
nutritionists, survivorship workshops and more. We will be actively working to make people aware of what
services are available. We also know that since deductibles are very high, that can keep people from getting the
care they need. There are organizations who provide support outside of medical help so people can afford to pay
these high deductibles. We’ll keep you informed as we establish alliances with these other organizations.
Lastly, be sure to check out the new website at www.fromourheart.org. The site contains all the details around the
karaoke contest as well as the walk.
Hope to see you all at the fundraising karaoke contests and again at the walk on March 11th. Your 2017 Board: John Thurston – VP, Barb Riordan – Treasurer/Secretary Board Members: Guylyn DeMeyere, Patricia Downing, Julie Herder, Kris Hornsby, Terri James and Dona Wells
