For more than a dozen years, From Our Hearts, Inc. has been raising funds to provide screening and treatment for the debilitating disease of breast cancer for eligible people in the Greater Pine Island area.
OctoberBreast is one of the non-profit’s events that makes it possible for that mission to be carried out. This year’s OctoberBreast offers a fun and entertaining way for Pine Island to gather in support of islanders needing screening and those struggling with breast cancer and celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
OctoberBreast 2018 will be held Sunday, October 28 from noon to 4 p.m. at Miceli’s. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy music by Strange Arrangement, Mel Meo as Dottie (our hilarious local islander who tells it like it is), a blind auction for Pine Island Reeboks decorated by local artists (pictured), the Pink Heals firetruck and volunteers, 50/50s, merchandise and the Pink Drink Special.
“We invite everyone to join us for an afternoon of local humor and laughter, musical entertainment and great food while supporting those on the island who need financial support for breast cancer prevention and treatment,” said From Our Hearts President Barb Riordan. “Come visit us at this unique event you can feel good about. You might even walk away with your own custom painted pair of Pine Island Reeboks!”

FROST Clinical Study

The Frost clinical study is currently enrolling patients.  The FROST Clinical Study examines the use of cryoablation as an alternative to surgical resection for the management of primary early stage invasive breast cancer.  This study is intended to assess the outcomes of cryoablation alone as an alternative to standard breast surgery (lumpectomy) in malignant tumors.  Currently, there are a total of 14 sites across the nation enrolling patients with many more finalizing paperwork.  For more information call 800-909-3060 or visit

From Our Hearts 17th Annual Breast Fest Walk

March 10, 2018

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the SJCCA Saturday for Breast Fest. Our event was smaller this year, but with the donations received there will still be help for Breast Cancer screenings and procedures in our community. It was a beautiful and inspiring day. We are so thankful for the 20 new people who became new members of From Our Hearts. With their help, next year we will continue with the 18th Annual Breast Fest.

Due to the shortage of volunteers Pine Island From Our Hearts has joined forces with the Beacon of HOPE for this year’s 17th Annual BreastFest Walk to be held Saturday, March 10.
“Unfortunately this year we were forced to cancel the festivities that surround the walk,” From Our Hearts president Barb Riordan said. “But we always have 300 to 400 walkers every year and with the Beacon’s help and their many volunteers, we have scheduled the walk. We’re inviting all walkers to our 5K and 1 mile walk next month.”
From Our Hearts is now looking to the future to continue to provide financial help to members of the community in their fight against breast cancer.
“Our success has been because of the generosity of each of our members,” Riordan said. “Over the years we have been able to help over 1,000 women and men in our community to receive critical evaluations and treatment in their fight against breast cancer. To do this we need your help.”
“The Beacon of HOPE is proud to be a partner with From our Hearts,” Beacon executive director Betsy Haesemeyer said. “Working together we can better identify residents in need of services and initiate next health care steps as quickly as possible. From Our Hearts and the Beacon currently work with Partners in Breast Cancer Care and Lee Health, the experts in facilitating the services (diagnostic testing through treatment) our residents may need.
“Together the 3 organizations can make the difference for individuals and their families in detecting and fighting Breast Cancer.”
Pine Island From Our Hearts next meeting is at the Blue Crab Key clubhouse on Feb. 8 from 4-6 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
If people are interested in finding out more, they can call 239-283-5643 or 239-247-3276 or attend the next meeting. They can also email FOH at [email protected].

From Our Hearts attends Beacon of Hope’s Wellness Committee Meeting.

From Our Hearts, as a member of the Beacon of Hope’s Wellness Committee, attended a Cancer Coalition Outreach meeting at St John’s Episcopal Church at 771 Stringfellow Rd, St. James City on July 18, 2017. All local organizations and members of the community were invited to attend this session where we introduced islanders to many of the free or low cost services available to those facing cancer. In addition to sharing information about these available services, the Beacon of Hope’s Wellness Committee is building a resource guide so island residents will know where to go when in need either due to health or non health related issues. This meeting was a beginning to build that directory.
